A teenage girl from Wales has been left paralysed after a mistake at an NHS hospital led to a spinal anaesthetic being left in place for too long.
Sophie Tyler, 14, of Risca, near Newport, had gallstone surgery in Birmingham Children's Hospital in 2008. However, Birmingham hospital failed to remove the spinal anaesthetic for two days, permanently paralysing Sophie from the waist down.
Sophie’s mother has described her as ‘very determined’ and said that Sophie intends to go to university. The family have now instructed personal injury compensation solicitors to sue the NHS hospital for the blunder.
The hospital said it was "deeply sorry" and that it had made changes to prevent it happening again.
Dr Vin Siwakar of Birmingham Children's Hospital said:
"At the age of 14 to be told the news that you will never walk again is unimaginable, and to discover that mistakes which were entirely avoidable has been incredibly hard for them to cope with."
